Many clients come to therapy declaring: “I want to get rid of my anger. I hate feeling angry.” But in Gestalt psychotherapy, we do not view anger as a defect or a toxin to eliminate. Anger is one of the most vital forms of psychological energy we possess—it is the immune system of the psyche.
The Two Extremes of Unhealthy Anger
- Explosive Dysregulation: Using anger as a blunt weapon to intimidate, control, or punish others. This damages relationships and leaves deep guilt.
- Chronic Suppression (Retroflection): Swallowing anger to be agreeable. This turns inward, resulting in depression, autoimmune flare-ups, and sudden crying spells.
The True Purpose of Healthy Anger
In its healthy, uncorrupted form, anger is informative and protective. It signals that a personal boundary has been violated, an injustice has occurred, or a vital value has been ignored. It provides the somatic energy needed to say “Stop”, “No”, or “This is unacceptable to me.”
“Anger without love turns into cruelty; love without anger turns into subservience.”
How We Work with Anger in Gestalt Sessions
- Contacting the Physical Energy: Noticing the heat, muscle tension, and breath changes without judgment.
- Decoding the Message: Asking: “What boundary did someone cross? What value am I defending?”
- Clean Expression: Learning to communicate strong boundaries clearly, calmly, and firmly without attacking the other person's dignity.
